Report your change of address to the Swedish Tax Agency digitally and easily
You can wait a while to unpack, but you should take care of your population registration address right away. Notifying the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) of your move digitally is usually the quickest way to change your permanent residence in Sweden. This applies whether you're moving to a new student apartment, a house in another municipality, or back to Sweden after a period in the USA.
This is not the same as forwarding mail. A move notification determines which address is registered in the population register, while mail forwarding ensures that letters reach your new mailbox. Both may be needed, but they serve different purposes.
When do you need to submit a move notification?
You should normally report your move when you actually change the residence where you live and spend your night's rest. A good rule of thumb is to report it before the moving day, or at the latest one week after you have moved in. If you do it in time, the new address can be registered from the day you moved. If you wait longer, the registration date may be affected.
It doesn't matter if you own the home, rent it first-hand or second-hand, live as a lodger, or move back in with your family. The decisive factor is where you actually live. An overnight apartment, summer house, or temporary accommodation does not automatically become your population registration address just because you use it sometimes.
For those living in the USA but planning to move back to Sweden, the date is especially important. Swedish population registration is based on where you are expected to live, not on where you receive the most mail or have a Swedish bank account. If you have questions about a move between countries, multiple residences, or a stay that is intended to be short-term, it is wise to check what applies to your specific situation before submitting the information.
How to notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move digitally
The digital service is available at Skatteverket and can be accessed after logging in with a Swedish e-identification, such as BankID. Have your new address, apartment number if applicable, and the move-in date readily available. For single-family homes, the property designation or full residential address is usually provided, while apartment numbers help distinguish the correct residence from the neighbor's.
In the service, you fill in where you are moving from, where you are moving to, and the date of the move. Check spelling, entrance, floor, and apartment number before signing. A single missing apartment number can cause processing to take longer or require additional address information.
After signing, you will receive a confirmation that the notification has been submitted. It's a good idea to save the confirmation until the move is complete and the information has been registered. This is especially practical if a landlord, employer, or other party asks when you reported the move.
When several people move together
Adults are generally responsible for their own move notification. If you are moving as a couple, cohabitants, or friends to the same address, each adult needs to ensure their own information is correct. For children under 18, guardians can report the move, but in cases of joint custody, the approval of the other guardian may be needed.
This is a point that is easily overlooked during family moves. The fact that one parent has registered their own new address does not automatically mean that all children have been reported. Always check which people are included before completing the matter.
Population registration and mail are two different things
A move notification to the Swedish Tax Agency updates your population registration address. This address is used by many public agencies and can be important for municipal services, school placement, healthcare contacts, voting rights in municipal elections, and where you pay municipal tax.
However, the official address does not automatically forward all mail. If you want to receive letters from companies, insurance companies, associations, or individuals at your new address for a transitional period, you may also need to order mail forwarding. You should also update your address yourself with, for example, your bank, insurance company, employer, electricity company, and subscription services.
It may feel like double work, but it reduces the risk of delayed invoices, important letters at the wrong address, and problems with identity checks. For a quicker move, you can put the practical address changes on the same to-do list as electricity contracts, home insurance, and broadband.
Common situations where you should pause
Most digital move notifications are quick, but some situations require a little more thought. This is especially true if you have protected personal data, lack a Swedish e-identification, or plan to move out of Sweden for at least one year. In such cases, different procedures than the usual digital move notification may be required.
The same applies if you commute between two residences. If you, for example, live in Sweden on weekdays but spend longer periods with your family in the USA or in another Swedish municipality, the assessment may depend on your actual living situation. Where you sleep most nights is an important part, but not always the whole picture. Family, work, studies, and how permanent the residence is can also play a role.
Another common question concerns second-hand housing. You can be registered in a rented apartment even if the contract is for a limited time, as long as that is where you actually live. However, you should not register with a friend or relative just because it's easier with the mail. The population registration should reflect reality.
Check this before signing
Before submitting the notification, it's worth doing a quick check. You don't need to create a long administrative ritual, but the following four pieces of information must be correct:
- the move-in date
- the complete new address
- apartment number or other housing information if applicable
- which people in the household are actually registered
What happens after the move has been registered?
Once the Swedish Tax Agency has registered your new population registration address, the information can be used by other authorities and organizations that retrieve address information from there. How quickly different actors update their own systems varies, so don't expect everything to change the same minute.
If you need a new ID card, want to enroll children in school, or want to check which municipality you belong to after the move, it may be wise to wait until the address appears as registered. If you have a time-sensitive situation, such as a school start or application for housing benefits, document the moving date and save the confirmation from your notification.
Also remember that a move often involves more everyday choices than just the address itself. Compare electricity contracts if you are moving to your own home, review your home insurance, and check what local services are available in the new municipality. When your population registration is correct, you'll have a much easier start in your new place - whether the move is around the corner or the beginning of a return to Sweden.
