School for Children & Adults

The Swedish school system provides people with opportunities to learn and develop throughout their lives. Education is free for everyone living in Sweden.

Children usually start in a preschool class at the age of six and then continue to primary school. Applications to municipal schools are usually made via the municipality's website. Independent schools have their own application systems.

After primary school, students can apply to upper secondary school through their region's upper secondary admissions. Information is available on GymnasieGuiden (www.gymnasium.se) and on the local upper secondary admissions website.

Adults can study at Komvux (adult education), SFI (Swedish for Immigrants), folk high schools, or universities. Applications to Komvux and SFI are made through your municipality. Folk high schools can be applied to via www.folkhogskola.nu. Universities and university colleges are applied to through www.antagning.se.

The Swedish school system is based on equality, democracy, and everyone's right to education.

Job seeking in Sweden

To apply for jobs in Sweden, you usually need a CV and a cover letter. You can find job vacancies on job sites, through the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), or directly on company websites.

You do not need to be a Swedish citizen to apply for a job. Citizens of EU/EEA countries have the right to work in Sweden. People from countries outside the EU/EEA usually need a work permit before they can start working.

When you find a suitable job, you submit your application. If the employer is interested, you will be invited for an interview.
